Mission Brief
Day 5 of the Skills Exchange Workshop pulled back the curtain on the operating system quietly powering 96% of top web servers and 100% of top 500 supercomputers: Linux. Vivek Ranjan Sahoo combined systems theory with an exhilarating live SSH demonstration connecting to an active AWS EC2 Ubuntu instance.
Objectives
- Understand the foundational role of Linux across web servers, supercomputers, Android, and AI/cloud
- Demystify the terminal, shell (Bash), and OS kernel relationship through the journey of a command
- Gain hands-on familiarity with remote cloud servers via SSH and AWS EC2 instances
- Master essential command-line navigation, file viewing/editing, permissions (chmod, sudo), and processes
- Explore the Linux single-root filesystem (/home, /etc, /proc, /dev) and 'everything is a file' philosophy
